Incredible value for money for the amount of food you get. I got the kebab in a combo for $15 and struggled to finish the food. The kebab isn’t constructed that well as a lot of toppings easily fall off of it. It still tasted good alongside the chips. Expect to spend almost $20 for a meal here.
Overview
Walking into Tasty Charcoal Kebab feels like stepping into a place that knows exactly what it is and doesn’t try to be anything else. Sitting along North Road at 533 North Rd, Ormond VIC 3204, Australia, this diner-style spot has quietly built a reputation among locals who care less about trends and more about food that actually delivers. I’ve eaten here more times than I can count, usually after a long day when the only thing that makes sense is charcoal-grilled meat, warm bread, and the smell of smoke that hits before the door even closes behind you.
What stands out first is the cooking method. Everything revolves around real charcoal grilling, not gas shortcuts. That matters. According to food science research published by Meat & Livestock Australia, charcoal grilling enhances the Maillard reaction, which is responsible for deeper flavor and aroma in meats. You taste that difference immediately here. The kebabs come off the grill with a slightly crisp exterior and a juicy center, whether you’re ordering lamb, chicken, or mixed platters from the menu. Watching the staff tend the grill is its own lesson in consistency-steady heat, constant turning, no rushing. One of the cooks once mentioned they rest the meat briefly after grilling, a technique backed by culinary schools like Le Cordon Bleu to help retain moisture.
The menu keeps things refreshingly focused. Instead of endless options, you get well-executed staples: charcoal kebabs, wraps loaded with salad and sauce, and plates served with rice or flatbread. The lamb kebab is a regular favorite in reviews, and for good reason. It’s seasoned simply, letting the meat and smoke do the heavy lifting. Chicken skewers are marinated long enough to stay tender, and vegetarian options like grilled falafel and halloumi make the place accessible to more than just meat lovers. Portions are generous without feeling careless, which is something diners often call out when leaving feedback online.
Sauces deserve their own mention. The garlic sauce is thick, sharp, and unapologetic, while the chili sauce has heat without drowning out flavor. Nutrition data from the Australian Institute of Food Safety often points out that balance is key in sauces, and here it shows. Nothing tastes overly processed, and you can tell these are made to complement, not mask, the grill work.
The atmosphere leans casual and welcoming. You’ll see families grabbing dinner, tradies stopping by late, and students hanging around with wraps in hand. Service is fast but not rushed, and staff actually remember repeat customers. That kind of consistency builds trust, which is why the restaurant maintains strong local reviews year after year. One Google reviewer summed it up perfectly with best kebabs in Ormond, and it’s hard to argue after a few visits.
There are limits, and it’s fair to say so. Seating can feel tight during peak hours, and parking along North Road isn’t always easy. Still, most regulars work around it because the food is worth the minor hassle. In an area packed with takeaway options, this place stands out by sticking to fundamentals and doing them right. When people talk about authentic charcoal kebab spots in Melbourne’s southeast, this diner keeps coming up, not because it shouts the loudest, but because it quietly earns its reputation every night the grill fires up.

Great food and service! Had the lamb skewers served with rice and salad which was pretty much satisfied my cravings. Juma was very friendly throughout out my meal and even offered mint sauce to accompany the dish. Would definitely be coming back in the future to try the other dishes in this place! Thanks for the great customer service Juma! Highly recommend this place if you’re looking for a no fuss lunch or dinner.
Excellent food and wonderful service. We got the chicken liver and mix kebab with rice. The food was perfectly spiced and the host was very attentive. Will definitely return because I can't remember the last time I had such a tasty liver.
Five stars ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Really, really good food. I highly recommend coming here and getting the mixed kebab plate with rice, dined in. You can taste the charcoal flavour on the kebab skewers, and goes so well with the rice. The chicken and lamb were so tender. The grilled tomato was a surprise too and really brings the meal together.
